I’m going to only discuss free adult hosting for blogs in this post. As an adult blogger I’m pretty familiar with free hosted blog services (FHBs) whereas I don’t spend too much time or actually any time using any kind of free hosting for other sites. The reason why is simple. I like to have as much control over my websites and thus my income, as possible. I host every website I build on my hosting. In other words, I pay for it myself.
Don’t get me wrong, I built some blogs on free hosts when I started out as a newb. I made money, too. But it was only when I began to to take webmastering seriously and got my own hosting that I began to see real returns for my time. It’s the difference between someone who does this as a hobby and someone who wants to earn a real living, I can’t put it any more simply than that.
I know webmasters who have built an empire on free hosting. You CAN make money using free hosts but think about it. There are no guarantees in life, ANY free host can fold up tomorrow and take your ten or one hundred blogs with it. Free hosts that have certain rules in place can change those rules and you have zero control over it. ZERO.
I know. I started a free blog host last year. But one weekend I went away with my GF and when I came back my blog service had gone down……and everyone’s blogs were down. Not good. I contacted my host and they fixed the problem. Next weekend the same thing happened again. It was obvious to me someone was pushing the wrong f-ing button every weekend at my host. So I made preparations to move to another host and a thought popped in my head, “Is this how I want to live, waiting for something to go wrong?”
I thought about that hard for a couple of hours. I do not like to give up on anything, especially something I had worked so hard to set up. And I definitely do not like telling other webmasters that I’m giving up and they are losing their blogs…….but that’s what I did. It was the right thing to do. Because sooner or later I would have made that decision down the line when a lot more time had been invested by other webmasters in my blogging service.
So I know first hand about free hosted blogging services. Does that mean that X, Y or Z service will go under tomorrow? No, not necessarily. But no one can promise they won’t, either. I’ve only been in the biz a few years and I’ve seen it happen more than once.
Free hosted blogging services usually take the best advertising spots, that’s another consideration. Whether you want to think about that is up to you but you’re losing the best places for your banners or text ads when you use free hosting. In other words, you’re losing MONEY.
Okay, now that I’ve tried to impress on you not to build your empire on free hosting, what can you do with free hosting? You can build blogs on free hosting for back links and you can build feeder blogs (also called traffic blogs) to ‘feed’ traffic to blogs and other websites you have on your own hosting. These would be blogs that are expendable and can be replaced. If they stay up, fine. If they don’t, for whatever reason, you can put up more.
Now, except for using very specific keyword subdomains on free hosts I build my feeder blogs on my own hosting. That’s just me. Why? Even feeder blogs can and usually do bring in sales and I’m not going to leave my income, even a part of it, under someone else’s control. But if you feel comfortable putting your feeder blogs on free hosting go for it. If you’re just building blogs for back links that’s totally fine. Just don’t spend too much time on these blogs, put the time into your money makers.
